My Paternal Ancestry
Families of Scottish Origin

Allan – This Allan family originates from Banffshire in Scotland.  I have traced it back to the mid 1600s.

Dalgetty An uncommon Scottish surname.  Our family has long been connected to the Black Isle in Scotland.  My research takes us back to the late 1600s so far.

Chisholm – Originally a n name from the South of Scotland, this family migrated to the Highlands in the 14th century.

Tolmie – a Scottish surname, originating in the Highlands, from my Granny Allan’s (nee Dalgetty) side of the family.  It was also her middle name.

My Maternal Ancestry
Families from the North of England and Ireland

Tobin – of Irish origin, possibly even Norman French.  My family came from Ireland to the North of England at the time of the Irish Potato famine and became cotton weavers and railway workers at the height of the Industrial Revolution.

Carrick – A Borders name, the most notable one being the Earl of Carrick, Robert the Bruce.

Bell – was my Grandad Carrick’s Mother’s family and came from Nothumberland.

Bennett – my Great Grandma was a Bennett and she married a Tobin.  They moved from Wales to Cheshire during the Industrial Revolution.

Families of French, Channel Island and UK heritage

Bouchet  – Meaning ‘Big Mouth’ – our family comes from Britanny in France, in and around the medieval town of Dinan.

Boivin – another name of French origin meaning to drink wine!  (Works well with Bouchet then!)

Blake – This family came from England and moved between Jersey and Alderney.

Stoneham – This family has been hard to trace.  Only going back a couple of generations but the family moved to Jersey as servants with two wealthy ladies.

Families mostly from the UK with European links

Lamb – My mother-in-law’s maiden name.  I’ve traced the back to 1690 in London.

Pointon – From Staffordshire, so far going back to 1755.

Stringer – Connected to the Pointon family, this family also came from Staffordshire.

Beachcroft – This interesting family produced two governors of the Bank of England and were part of the beginnings of the East India Company.

Harrison – Connected to the Beachcrofts , this family originated in Westmorland (now Cumbria) and Lincolnshire.

Cavell – my husband’s Great Grandmother was a Cavell and first cousin of Edith Cavell who was a WW1 British Nurse celebrated for saving lives of soldiers on both sides.  She was shot by a German firing squad in 1915.

Workman – Connected to the Lamb family, this family came from Hampshire.

Nokes – This family was connected to the Mouchet and Cavell families and orginated in Kent.

Mouchet – the family were Hugenots escaping persecution in Switzerland and were part of the foundation of the Swiss Church in London.
